There was rising anti-semitism in Iraq, and its government illegalized Zionism and aliyah. The Israeli government negotiated with Iraq, and Iraq granted Jews the right to make aliyah as long as they leave all their money and property behind, except for $140 and 66 pounds of luggage. Israel conducted airlifts to bring 120,000 Jews to Israel over a few months.
