Sergeant Oron Shaul was an Israeli soldier killed in Operation Protective Edge in 2014. His death first drew international attention when Hamas announced that he had been taken prisoner together with Hadar Goldin. A few days later Israel confirmed that Oron was killed, and Hamas demanded the release of prisoners to return Oron's body to the soldier's family.

On January 19th, 2025 just hours before the planned ceasefire agreement in the Iron Swords war with Hamas, which began after the brutal attack on October 7th, 2023 , Oron's remains were recovered in a covert operation and brought back to Israel. for burial by his family the next day.
